We all know that pretty much once the turkey, stuffing, cranberries and casserole left overs are being taken out of the fridge after Thanksgiving that if you turn on certain local radio stations you will hear them playing Christmas music. To not become sick and tired of the festive music I chose not to really listen to it until a couple of weeks before Christmas. I have to admit that I have been listening to a lot of music (in the car to/from work, running errands, in stores, through Pandora, and on Comcast while doing things around the house), and I have heard some songs that I felt the urge to talk about.
When I was growing up, mainly because of my church, I was familiar with Christmas songs such as Hark! The Herald Angel Sings, Away in a Manager, Joy to the World, and the all time classic candle lighting service finale...Silent Night. As I got older I began to associate Christmas music more with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bruce Springstein, The Carpenters, The Beach Boys, Jose Felciano, Marilyn Monroe, Alvin and the Chipmunks....and many, many more.
But today, there are so many artists that are trying to make the top list with their Christmas albums...and I have to bring up a few people and/or songs.
Top No-Nos on My List
Justin Beiber - Mistletoe and Justin Beiber and Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas
WHAM! - Last Christmas
How many times will the radio play this song?!?!?!? Not only is it overkill, but there are at least three other artists that have done covers of the song and so it just gets played even more! If you really want a good laugh you should watch the music video...
Jim Brickman and Olivia Jade Archibold - Fa la la la la It's Christmas
I don't even need to comment on this one...just listen to it once, and then think about hearing it two more times within the hour.
Simple Plan - My Christmas List
This song made me stop painting one day and go to my laptop to look up the lyrics. It really epitomizes the American culture, as sad as it is, and goes in the complete opposite direction of what Christmas is truly about. Here are the lyrics...I can't believe the line in there about wanting a girl...just so sad...
Santa is coming tonight
And I want a car, and I want a life
And I want a first class trip to Hawaii
I want a lifetime supply
Of skittles & slurpees and Eskimo pies
I want a DVD,
A big screen TV
Just bring me things that I don't need
[CHORUS:]
'Cuz now it's Christmas
And I want everything
I just can't wait
Christmas
So don't stop spending
I want a million gifts, that's right
Don't forget my Christmas list tonight
'Cuz now it's Christmas
Somebody take me away
Or give me a time machine
To take me straight to midnight
I'll be alright
I want a girl in my bed
Who knows what to do
A PlayStation 2
I want a shopping spree
In New York City
Just bring me things that I don't need
[CHORUS]
I wish I could take this day
And make it last forever
And no matter what I get tonight
I want more
It's Christmas and I want everything
I just can't wait
It's Christmas and I want everything now
And I want a car, and I want a life
And I want a first class trip to Hawaii
I want a lifetime supply
Of skittles & slurpees and Eskimo pies
I want a DVD,
A big screen TV
Just bring me things that I don't need
[CHORUS:]
'Cuz now it's Christmas
And I want everything
I just can't wait
Christmas
So don't stop spending
I want a million gifts, that's right
Don't forget my Christmas list tonight
'Cuz now it's Christmas
Somebody take me away
Or give me a time machine
To take me straight to midnight
I'll be alright
I want a girl in my bed
Who knows what to do
A PlayStation 2
I want a shopping spree
In New York City
Just bring me things that I don't need
[CHORUS]
I wish I could take this day
And make it last forever
And no matter what I get tonight
I want more
It's Christmas and I want everything
I just can't wait
It's Christmas and I want everything now
My Christmas Thank You for Being Able to Sing and Do it Right Person
Michael Buble
Although, I wasn't a hundred percent about his special tv Christmas show (solely because it looked like he mouthed the words to his recorded songs) he really is on point! He has a great voice, and was able to redo some great Christmas classics without messing them up. One of the the most creative songs he redid, in my opinion, was Santa Baby. At first I thought, how will he do this...he is a guy? But he changed the lyrics and pulled it off!
